| I finally acquired the Five for Fighting album, "The Battle for Everything." I know that most of FfF's songs have a theme of loss/death but lately I've been thinking about it a little more than usual.
The song "100 Years" says, "Another blink of an eye; 67 is gone; The sun is getting high; We're moving on...; I'm 99 for a moment; Dying for just another moment" and it is so true. We have a short time to live and do what we're meant to.
But, there has to be more to life, the universe, and everything than waking up, going to work, coming home, eating, sleeping, starting over again. Normally I take solace in routines. I'm an introvert who enjoys an order, the same order, to his life. Yet, the routine of late is lacking meaning.
I love my work, my life, my friends, my family, and what I do. What does it all mean? I'm worried, perhaps concerned is a better word, that what each of us, that what I am doing, do isn't memorable and won't make a difference.
I'm politically active and try to do the right thing. 10 years from now, 50 years from now, 100 years from now, 5 thousand years from now will this all be here? Will what I do now impact anything then?
At my age, just out of college, I should be wide-eyed and ready to change the world. I don't think that's possible anymore. Perhaps my increasingly more serious relationship brings forth these questions. In a handfull of years I expect to be married. A few years after that I'll likely have a child. I want to get married. I love her and am in love with her. I want to have children with her. I know that and I know it is the most important thing I will ever do. Yet, I can't help but wonder...what's the point? Is the point to continue our species and get through another day?
Kevin Smith's film "Clerks." has a song, its theme, "Can't Even Tell" by Soul Asylum. The song has a line, "No one knows nothing about me; I'm guessing I'll just keep 'em guessing" that I've thought a lot about in relation to my work. People come in, do their thing, say hi, we pass a few pleasantries but that's it. They don't know anything of substance about me nor I them. Same with my neighbors. I'm a politician and I can walk down the street with complete strangers recognizing my name, my voice, and my face. I can get 67% of my town's vote but they don't know anything about me. They don't know what I read or what I think or feel. They only know what is shown on the public side of my seven-fold fence. The same applies to them. They have three names. One for the public, one for close friends and family, and one for themself to never share. I only see their public name.
The song's chorus is, "We lived through another day; It's a good excuse to celebrate; Take a number knock on wood; We'll find a reason to feel good."
Is the point in life, of everything we do and have done and will do to merely live through another life and sit back with something to drink while a funny program runs on the telly distracting us from the epidemics, death, war, attrition, and hunger throughout the world? If so, is it enough?
I know I don't have answers and perhaps there are none. Perhaps the asking is enough. In college I minored in Philosophy and several courses mentioned that our asking important questions is good enough. We won't find answers but we will find more questions. And, in the asking of questions we can find solace. If we don't find that solace we'd be over-run with the unpredictable events in life and the constant "what is up, what is down, what is life, what is real" that we'd fizzle. We need to anchor onto something, right or wrong, and use it to make it through another day.

| Lately I've been in the mood to paintball. I got the urge, out of left field, awhile back. There's some places around 30-45 minutes away that I know of. My best friend's little brother, he's 14...wait he's 15 now, goes with some pals and sometimes her dad. He got me psyched a year or so ago and that's why I own a gun. Fast forward to recently. I've been in the mood to go and mentioned it to some friends. Rather lackluster response. "You mean I have to get dirty?" "I don't own a gun" "My mom and sister say you can hurt yourself and they're a nurse practicioner and a pediatrician" "isn't there expensive?" "you have asthma you'll literally die right away" Not encouraging I admit but I wasn't waylaid. I let it rest and have become re-energized these past few days.
Over the weekend while I was dealing with a stomach bug of some sort, I was sick when I got home from work on Friday and had to call into my other job on Saturday and that sucked because I love that job but not much one can do when one is sick, I desired my gun. We keep it in the attic with my stuff. Dryer there than the basement and my mom doesn't approve of firearms of any kind. I looked around on eBay for some parts and also on the Spyder and Tippmann websites. Drooled over the 98 Custom and A5. Really yearn for a sniper barrel. Today I looked up VForce, they make my helmet, and saw some other models I want. I realize that I should get a prescription visor. My glasses don't fit too well in the visor and I'm afraid of messing them up. To compare, inexpensive Vforce or expensive Giorgio Armani glasses. But, I digress.
Last night I mentioned the goal that before the summer ends I'll go paintballing at least once with some of my friends. I told it to one of them who owns a gun, the make or model he can't recall, and he was less than enthusiastic. "I don't have any of the gear, no balls, or anything and isn't it expensive?" He I can work on. I mentioned it in passing to my girlfriend who was honestly willing to give it a try. I'd do anything for Big Red and she for me so I wasn't surprised by her response. I don't know if she realized what she was remarking on but I'll mention it again so it doesn't blindside her. I just need to get my best friend involved and a few others. My best friend will be the most difficult and easiest to convince. We often play lasertag with people and she likes things that involve a lot of people. But, right now she's going on dates with some guy who she loves and who she hopes will maybe be her boyfriend in the maybe not too distant future. Plus, she has a tendency to forget her friends while she's with a guy, she's always with a guy, and she gets bored easily plus she manages to change her mind a lot. Women's prerogative, I know. But, it can be grating sometimes. On the flip side she's my best friend and we're like family. When I graduated she got me this kickass card that made me cry, "For my brother" damn that did me in. Anywho, she's not into the getting dirty but her brother and dad paintball now and again and she'd probably get one or both of them involved if we went.
One of the locations is a town over from where Big Red lives. Not too far for her although we'd likely meet at my place and then head. Ever want something like bad but know it won't come to fruitation? That's how I feel about this. I want to go but I know, deep down, that it won't come to pass.
Before I draw this to a close I should share a bit about paintball and I. I've gone a couple times when I was in high school with my church. I had a blast. I own a Spyder Sport semi-automatic blue paintball gun. I like the gun, its cool and a nice entry model. Unfortunately the hopper sits on top making my sight bar useless. A side-loading hopper would be much better. I want to upgrade to an automatic hopper down the road. When I can afford it I want to pick up a Tippmann A5 and in the interim I want a Tippmann 98 Custom. I want to set up the custom with a sniper rifle. My Spyder Sport seems to be good for mid-range and it actually bears some resemblence to a smaller Heckler & Koch MP5K-PDW with the stock cut off, the front cut and the entire gun made smaller (http://www.hecklerkoch-usa.com/index.jsp?loc=231&SITEID=B&PartNumber=MP52). The sport is an older model, thus difficult to find, but it looks similar, in some regards, to the Spyder Victor II (http://www.pbreview.com/products/reviews/2319/).
